San Jon Ranch is a family owned operation located in Eastern New Mexico. The headquarters is located five miles south of San Jon village. Our pride in perfecting the genetics and resource management has helped build our reputation as high quality beef producers over the past 50 years. Under normal rainfall conditions, the ranch can accommodate 650 head of commercial Red Angus. Cattle wear the quarter circle "U" brand on the left rib and horses the left shoulder.
The genetic make-up of the cow herd consists of trace amounts of Hereford and Gelbvieh; however, Red Angus has become dominant over the last 20 years of breeding purebred Beckton Bulls and keeping the majority of the heifers for replacements. The calves sell on Superior Livestock Auction every year with the heifers often outselling the steers. They are sold as "All Natural, Age & Source Verified Beef." The cattle are traditionally handled with horses, which contributes to quiet cattle-handling practices.
The ranch mare band is mainly sired by Solid Sugarbar, an own son of Colonel Freckles; as well as Playperview by Playgun. They have all been broke to ride and proven themselves for the day to day cattle handling tasks on the ranch. We select for conformation, disposition and versatility. Our latest addition is a 2012 own son of Playgun named Gimmie A Gun. His first crop of colts hit the ground in 2016 and they are a pleasure to see and be around!
